Generative AI can quickly draft a scenario, answer choices, and an explanation. Speed alone does not make a question accurate or useful. In exam preparation, one invented rule or ambiguous distractor can teach the wrong lesson, so treat a model's output as a draft that needs evidence and review.
Start with the source
Choose the learning objective and the material that supports it before prompting a model. For LET coverage, use the current Professional Regulatory Board for Professional Teachers materials and the applicable Table of Specifications (TOS). For CLE, consult current PRC and other official legal or regulatory sources relevant to the topic. Record the document title, issuing body, date, and the exact section used.
Ask the model to draft one question against that bounded source. Ask it to identify the supporting passage, but verify the passage yourself; a plausible-looking quotation or citation can still be fabricated or mismatched.
Review the item, not just the answer key
- Confirm that the keyed answer follows from the cited source and that the source is current.
- Check that there is one defensible best answer and that each distractor is plausible without being secretly correct.
- Remove clues in wording, irrelevant complexity, stereotypes, and details the learner was never expected to know.
- Read the explanation independently and make sure it teaches the rule, not merely repeats the answer.
- Have a qualified subject reviewer resolve uncertainties before publishing.
Keep a record of the source and human edits. Tell learners when AI contributed to practice content, and never imply that generated questions are official, leaked, or predictive of an exam. UNESCO’s guidance also emphasizes human agency, privacy, and validation when generative AI is used in education.
